If you are staying in Niseko, Rusutsu is the day trip that most local riders recommend first. It is only about 45 minutes away by road, it gets plenty of snow, and its tree runs are some of the best in Hokkaido. On a busy powder day, it can feel like you have the mountain to yourself.
Why go: Rusutsu has huge areas of well-spaced trees, short lift lines compared with Niseko at peak times, and terrain that stays good for days after a storm.

Why snowboarders love Rusutsu
The trees. Much of Rusutsu’s terrain is gladed, with space between the trees that makes it easy to link turns in deep snow. Many runs have untouched tree sections right next to the groomers.
Fewer people. Rusutsu is a big resort with fewer visitors than Niseko, so fresh snow often lasts longer. On a weekday you can lap the same trees all morning and still find untracked lines.
Good on windy days. When strong winds close the upper lifts in Niseko, Rusutsu’s lower, tree-covered terrain can still be excellent. Check lift status before you go.
Instructor’s note
In our experience, Rusutsu is excellent for tree riding, and the grooming is superb.
The three mountains
Mt Isola
The biggest and most challenging of the three, with long fall-line runs and tree riding between almost every groomer. If you only ride one mountain, ride Isola.
East Mountain
Linked to the other mountains by through-gondolas, with intermediate terrain, more trees and views of Mt Yotei. A good place to look for leftovers in the afternoon.
West Mountain
Next to the main hotel complex, with the gentlest terrain, the ski school, night skiing and the terrain park. A good warm-up before heading over to Isola.
How to get to Rusutsu from Niseko
- Shuttle bus: Rusutsu runs a “Powder Day Trip” bus from the Hirafu Welcome Center in winter. In 2025-26 it left at 8:30, took about 45 minutes, cost ¥9,000 return, needed booking by 15:00 the day before and did not include lift tickets. Check the Rusutsu website for 2026-27 dates.
- Car: The most flexible option. Winter roads need care, and you need an International Driving Permit valid in Japan (1949 Geneva Convention) or an official Japanese translation of your licence.
- Private transfer: Easy with a group, and you do not have to drive on snowy roads.
Tips for your Rusutsu day
- Leave early. Aim to be on the first lifts, especially after an overnight storm.
- Head straight to Isola. That is where most of the best trees are.
- Stay with your partner. The trees are wide and deep, and tree wells are a real risk. Read our tree well safety guide.
- Respect the ropes. Off-piste rules at Rusutsu are different from Niseko’s gate system. Check the resort’s rules on the day.
- Pack lunch money in cash. Not every food stop takes cards.
Is Rusutsu better than Niseko?
Not better, different. Niseko has the gates, the biggest variety and the best village. Rusutsu has some of Hokkaido’s best in-bounds trees and fewer people. Spending one or two days of a Niseko trip at Rusutsu is one of the best ways to get more powder. For more options, see the best snowboard resorts in Japan.
