Night Riding in Niseko: The Complete Guide to Snowboarding After Dark

Night riding in Niseko: 2026-27 dates, which lifts run at each resort, why the snow stays good and how to make the most of a night session.

Most visitors pack up when the lifts start to glow. They are missing one of the best things about Niseko. When it is snowing, the lit runs refill while you ride, the crowds are gone and the snow under the floodlights is as light as it was at 9am. Grand Hirafu has long been described as having the largest night-riding terrain in Japan, and all four Niseko United resorts run night sessions in mid-winter.

2026-27 dates: Night riding at Niseko United is scheduled from 12 December 2026 to 22 March 2027, and it is included in your All Mountain Pass. Hours vary by resort and are usually from around 4pm into the evening, so check the official lift status page on the day.

Why night riding in Niseko is different

Night skiing at many resorts means icy, scraped-off runs. Niseko is different because it snows so often in mid-winter and the snow is so dry. On a storm night, fresh snow can settle on the lit slopes faster than people can track it out, and the cold keeps it soft.

It is also quiet. Most powder hunters are out first thing in the morning and done by mid-afternoon. By early evening, the lifts are often close to empty.

How to make the most of a night session

  1. Go when it is snowing. A clear, cold night is fun for carving. A snowy night is when you find refills.
  2. Change your lens. A clear or yellow lens is essential under floodlights. Dark lenses make night riding hard. See our goggle lens guide.
  3. Layer up. Temperatures drop quickly after sunset, and wind on the gondola is cold. A dry pair of gloves for the evening makes a big difference.
  4. Stay on lit runs. Trees and off-piste areas are not lit and not patrolled at night. The gates are not an option after dark.
  5. Eat late. Many Hirafu restaurants get busy from 6pm. Riding until close and eating afterwards often means shorter waits, but book ahead in peak weeks.
  6. Plan your way home. If you are not staying slope-side, check the last shuttle bus times before you start.

Do not go into the trees at night. Even inside the resort, falling into a tree well in the dark is extremely dangerous. Read our tree well safety guide.

Instructor’s note

Hirafu has the largest night riding area; Annupuri usually has fewer people but less terrain. At night the cold dries the snow out and it gets even more powdery, so after a snowfall it is spectacular. Clear lenses are a must.

The Super Course is spectacular at night when there is powder, and if Super Ridge is open and still holds powder, it is a different experience: very good, even though you cannot see much. It is much colder, so dress for it.

And be careful: at that time of day there are plenty of instructors training or riding fast, taking advantage of the quieter slopes and lighter workload.

Is night riding included in the lift pass?

Yes. Night riding is included in the Niseko United All Mountain Pass and in day passes for the resort you are riding. For 2026-27, a 1-day adult All Mountain Pass costs ¥8,800 to ¥13,500 depending on the season, and multi-day and point passes are also available.

Who is night riding best for?

  • Riders on a short trip who want more time on snow.
  • Beginners and improvers, who get quiet, groomed slopes without daytime traffic.
  • Powder hunters on storm nights, especially on Hirafu’s lit upper runs.
  • Families, especially at Niseko Village and Hanazono, where the lit terrain is gentler.

Want to get more out of your days, too?

A morning with a local instructor will show you where to ride in the day so you have legs left for the night.
