Right next to Annupuri, but not part of Niseko United, Niseko Moiwa is the small mountain many local riders head to when they want space. It has only a few lifts and a compact trail map, but it gets plenty of snow, it has access to the backcountry through its own gates and it has a relaxed, freeride-friendly feel that is hard to find in the busier resorts.
In one line: Moiwa is Niseko’s small independent resort, with its own lift ticket, two summit gates and a much quieter vibe than Hirafu.

Why snowboarders ride Moiwa
- Space. With a small lift network and fewer visitors, fresh snow lasts longer than at the big resorts.
- Freeride feel. The terrain is varied for its size, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
- Gate access. Two gates at the summit lead into the backcountry, under the same Niseko Rules as the rest of the area: helmet and avalanche transceiver required, never duck a rope.
Instructor’s note
Moiwa has good freeride, few people, natural half pipes and a couple of gates.
A warning from experience: we have picked up groups who tried to navigate Moiwa’s backcountry with their own maps, ended up looking for the back bowl and had to call for a pickup. If you do not know the terrain, go with someone who does.
Things to know before you go
- It is not on the All Mountain Pass. Buy a Moiwa ticket separately. In 2025-26, an adult day ticket was ¥13,000, so compare prices before committing a whole day.
- It is small. Moiwa is a powder-day mountain, not a place to cruise groomers all week.
- Hours are daytime only. There is no night riding.
- Getting there. Moiwa is next to Annupuri, a short drive from Hirafu. Check shuttle options with your accommodation.
Moiwa and the gates
Moiwa’s summit gates open into backcountry terrain with no patrol and no avalanche control. If you are new to Niseko’s side-country, read riding the Niseko gates on a snowboard, check the live gate status app and consider going with a guide.
